Warranty language in this trade gets used loosely, so here is what the words actually mean.

A warranty on workmanship covers the quality of the labour: whether the panel was aligned correctly, whether the weld holds, whether the paint adheres and does not peel or bubble. It is the shop standing behind its own hands.

That is different from a warranty on parts, which usually comes from the part manufacturer rather than the shop, and different again from coverage for new damage, which no repair warranty covers anywhere. If you back into a post two years later, that is a new claim.

The questions worth asking about any lifetime warranty, at any shop:

• Is it in writing, and can I see the document before I authorise the repair?
• Does it cover workmanship, paint, and structural work, or only some of those?
• What voids it? Rust originating outside the repair area and subsequent damage are common exclusions.
• How do I make a claim, and who do I call?
• How long has the shop been in business, and is it likely to still be there in ten years?

When our line items arrive in the format the carrier already reads, there is less back and forth about labour times and part descriptions, and the approval usually moves faster.

When we disassemble the vehicle and find damage nobody could see at the estimate, we document it and submit a supplement to the insurer ourselves. You do not have to negotiate it. We work with all major carriers and bill them directly, so in most cases the only money that changes hands with you is your deductible.

Matching colour is not a matter of looking up the paint code. A vehicle that has spent five Jackson summers at elevation has faded, and it has faded unevenly depending on which panels catch the most sun. Factory paint also varies slightly between production batches. Matching properly means reading the existing panel, spraying a test card, and comparing it to your vehicle in daylight before touching it. That is how we do it.

That is also why blending exists. Rather than stopping the new colour dead at a panel edge, the painter carries a small amount of it into the adjacent panels so your eye never catches a line. When a blend panel appears on your estimate, it is craft, not padding.

• How long have you been repairing vehicles here? A warranty is a promise about the future, so it is worth knowing how long the shop making it has been around. We opened in 1973.
• Is my vehicle unibody or body-on-frame, and how will you measure it? Most cars and crossovers built today are unibody, meaning the body panels and the structure are one welded assembly. Most pickups are body-on-frame. Structural repairs on either should be verified against factory dimensions with measuring equipment, not judged by eye. Ours are.
• What does the warranty cover, for how long, and can I see it in writing? Warranties on workmanship, on paint, and on parts are three different things. Our guarantee covers body and structural repairs for as long as you own the vehicle.
• Who handles my insurance claim, me or you? At Mike’s the answer is us. We file it, we submit the supplements, and we bill the insurer directly.
• What parts will you use, and who decides? OEM parts come from the vehicle manufacturer. Aftermarket parts are made by a third party. Recycled parts are original parts pulled from another vehicle. Your insurance policy language usually governs which are paid for. Ask the shop to show you the parts line items on the estimate.
• How do you handle hidden damage? Once a vehicle is disassembled, damage that was not visible at estimate time often appears. The additional request sent to the insurer is called a supplement. Ask how supplements are documented and how they affect your timeline.
• Does my vehicle have cameras or radar behind the damaged area? Many vehicles carry driver assistance sensors in bumpers, grilles, mirrors and windshields. Those often require recalibration after a repair even when they look untouched.
• How will you keep me updated? Ask specifically who will call you and how often. Our estimator will call you by name.
